WEC Apprentices Gain Hands on Experience at new Blackburn Facility
At WEC Machining, we are proud to see the next generation of engineers developing their skills through real, hands-on experience. Our apprentices at the WEC Engineering Academy have recently been working on the beams for our new facility, while also supporting the welding of key components for our latest machinery. This kind of involvement gives them valuable exposure to large scale, high value projects that are rarely experienced so early in a career.
By working on structural elements of the new building and assisting with machine assembly, our apprentices are gaining a deeper understanding of both fabrication and machining environments. They are guided throughout by our highly experienced CSWIP certified instructors, recognised as some of the best in the industry. This ensures every task is completed to the highest standard while maintaining a strong focus on learning, safety, and precision.
These developments form part of our £10 million investment to build Europe’s largest subcontract heavy machining and nuclear fabrication hub in Blackburn. Located directly across the road from our existing machining facility, this new site represents a major step forward for WEC Group. It will also create 60 new jobs in Blackburn, supporting the local economy and strengthening the region’s engineering capabilities.
Earlier this year, we successfully commissioned our first new machine, the Correa Fox M. This high-performance gantry milling machine offers an impressive machining envelope of 12,500mm on the X axis, 5,000mm on the Y axis, and 3,000mm on the Z axis. Its large working capacity allows us to machine complex and oversized components with exceptional accuracy, efficiency, and repeatability.
We are also preparing to commission our second machine, a Correa Axia featuring a 20-tonne rotary table, which is due to go live very soon. Together, these investments significantly enhance our machining capabilities and position us at the forefront of heavy machining in the UK
It is an exciting time for WEC Machining, and we are pleased that our apprentices are playing an active role in shaping the future of our operations
