Our Machining History
WEC Machining’s story began in December 2005, when WEC Group acquired Precision Engineers (Fabrication) Ltd. At the time, the Group was subcontracting its machining requirements, so bringing these capabilities in-house was a natural step in its continued growth.
The business initially continued trading as Precision Engineers before being rebranded as Hi-Spec CNC in 2007, establishing a dedicated machining division within WEC Group.
In April 2010, WEC Group further strengthened its precision engineering capabilities with the acquisition of Nutter Aircrafts Ltd, a specialist machining company with more than 70 years’ experience. Its expertise in small, tight-tolerance components and specialist materials including exotic alloys and titanium helped the business expand into new markets.
In January 2017, the division became WEC Machining Ltd, marking another important stage in the development of the Group’s dedicated machining operations.
Continued investment has driven further expansion, with work beginning in 2025 on a new heavy machining and nuclear fabrication facility at Walker Park, Blackburn, significantly increasing WEC Machining’s capacity for large and complex engineering projects.

WEC Group
With over 45 years of experience, WEC Group is a leading name in the UK engineering and fabrication industry. Founded in 1979 by former apprentices Steve Hartley and Ross Place, the business began as a small welding and fabrication workshop in a 1,000 sq. ft. unit in Darwen, Lancashire, and has since grown into one of the UK’s largest specialist engineering and stainless steel fabrication providers.
In 2006, WEC launched its in-house Training Academy to help address the engineering skills shortage, offering award-winning welding apprenticeships and advanced training programmes that develop skilled coded welders, CNC machinists, and fabrication specialists.
With modern technology including water jet cutting, laser profiling, and shot blasting, alongside craneage capacity up to 30 tonnes, WEC delivers a complete manufacturing service from concept through to installation. Our in-house CAD and CNC capabilities, supported by CSCS-qualified construction and PTS-qualified rail installers, ensure precision-engineered solutions for a wide range of applications.
Through continued investment in technology and people, WEC supplies clients across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East with high-quality fabrication solutions that are delivered faster, more accurately, and to a consistently high standard.

FAQs
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. It refers to the automated control of machining tools and equipment using computer-generated instructions.
CNC technology enables manufacturers to produce complex components with high levels of precision, consistency, and efficiency. At WEC Machining, we use advanced CNC machinery and programming techniques to deliver precision-engineered components that meet the exact requirements of our customers.
CNC turning is a precision machining process used to manufacture cylindrical and rotational components. During the process, the workpiece rotates while a cutting tool removes material to create the required shape, dimensions, and finish.
At WEC Machining, we provide high-precision CNC turning services using advanced machinery capable of producing everything from simple shafts and pins to complex, high-tolerance components.
CNC milling is a machining process that uses computer-controlled rotating cutting tools to remove material from a fixed workpiece. This allows complex shapes, features, holes, slots, and surfaces to be produced with exceptional accuracy.
WEC Machining offers comprehensive CNC milling services for both prototype and production projects. Our state-of-the-art milling centres enable us to manufacture complex components to exact specifications.
CNC programming is the process of creating the digital instructions that control a CNC machine’s movements, speeds, tool changes, and machining operations. These instructions ensure components are manufactured accurately and efficiently according to the required design.
A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine works by following a pre-programmed set of instructions that control the movement of cutting tools and machinery. These instructions direct the machine to perform precise machining operations such as cutting, drilling, milling, and turning with minimal manual intervention.
WEC Machining utilises advanced CNC technology to manufacture high-quality components with exceptional accuracy and repeatability.
Large Machining Sectors
Specialising in large-scale and batch production machining, WEC Machining supplies precision-engineered components to industries including Offshore, Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Chemical, and Food Processing. Our advanced CNC machining technologies and skilled engineers ensure exceptional accuracy, consistency, and long-term performance.
